AIDS Run/WALK CHICAGO "FIGHTS COMPLACENCY"
Chicago, IL—September 6, 2002, Event organizers of Chicago's AIDS Run/Walk say Fight Complacency was chosen as the theme of this year's event for several reasons. Among them:
Studies from the recent World AIDS Conference in Barcelona indicating that a high number of young men in major U.S. cities--including those in the gay, Hispanic and African-American communities—have become complacent and unaware of their HIV status. Thus, more funding is needed for education and prevention programs.
Many local HIV/AIDS service organizations are being adversely impacted by decreased state revenues and budget cutbacks.
The demise of the recently-concluded Heartland AIDS Ride. This development will also adversely impact money raised for local HIV/AIDS service groups.
Proceeds from this year's AIDS Run/Walk Chicago will again benefit the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's grant making program. Since 1988, AFC--the largest source of HIV/AIDS philanthropic support in the Midwest--has provided more than $11 million to area HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy groups. This year's event will include a 5K run, a 5K walk as well as course route entertainment and other activities to be announced.
Last year's run/walk drew more than 8,000 participants. Because corporate sponsors underwrote the cost of producing the event, the nearly $160,000 raised by participating runners and walkers went directly to support AFC.
Registration materials are now available for AIDS Run/Walk Chicago—to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, at Chicago's Museum Campus at Columbus Drive and Roosevelt Rd.
Registration materials, including information on forming teams for this year's 5K run/walk, can be obtained by visiting www.aidschicago.org or by calling 773.868.3010. Registration brochures are also available at several local Walgreens' and Starbucks' locations.
